Responding to Leanna's comment on the previous post

Things Mom has expressed recently:

1. I think she'd enjoy being able to do a few more things to spruce up the house without tapping the home equity line of credit. If she wound up with a some substantial gift cards to Lowe's or Home Depot, she'd like that. That would also do our part in stimulating this otherwise sluggish sector of the economy (god, what a nerdy thing to say).

2. Along the lines of home improvement, I would think the added security of glass block windows for the 4 basement windows would be a plus.

3. Mom's dream trip is a trip to Switzerland. I don't know why Switzerland so much but I think she would just find it enchanting. However, I don't think Dad would gain much pleasure from a trip to Switzerland. So how would she go? Find some group of seniors and sign her up to go along?

Those are some of my thoughts.

I think we need to consider some ideas for mom's 70th birthday this coming January. It's a little over 5 months away. We have a little time, but I don't think we should dally in our discussions.

"Money" Tree Ideas

I thought I'd start a list of what we have planned for the 70 envelopes so far and who is in charge of getting it, if known:

1. DVD player (Jack or Su-ie)
2. Movie rental gift card(s)
3. Wallet size photos of Maddie (Leanna)
4. New wallet (Leanna)
5. Cash for Natchez's boarding (Leanna)
6. Cracker Barrel gift certificate(s)
7. Dress shirt (Kim)
8. Road atlas (Kim)
9. Plane ticket for Grandpa to California from Maddie (Leanna)
10. $70 cash (Leanna)

Gift Ideas #3

Mom liked the idea of a DVD player. Netflix? Perhaps he'd just as soon use the video rental store at Giant Eagle. We could get a Giant Eagle money/gift card to use for movies. (I would hope they wouldn't use it for groceries, but hey, whatever. Maybe they have a video only card.)

Mom also suggested he would get a bang out of a "money tree". You know how mom has done those from time to time, like when Steven would get one. Well, imagine a money tree with 70 one dollar bills. Or a few other bigger bills thrown in for good measure.

One other thing I think we should try to take care of: the dog (Natchez) will have to be put up in a boarding facility for two weeks. It might be nice if we took care of that, somehow. (More cash?)

He does not need any clothes. He has so many from Uncle Wesley and Uncle Lad's closets.

Oh, one other thing. I guess dad loves Dick Underwood's navigation/gps system that he has in his car. The ones that Yao Ming hawks, the Garmin, are $499 at Best Buy. I'm not sure what his needs are, but given some of his driving around and looking for things in his old age, well, this could be helpful. I'm not sure how helpful but... i'm just throwing that out there.

Travel update for Jack and Brenda

Su-ie and I have some more clarity to our plans.

We have just booked the boys on a flight to Orlando late on Tuesday. That way they miss minimal school. Their flights are one way so they'll ride back home with me and Su-ie on Saturday. This works out very well for us.

This allows me and Su-ie to depart from Akron by car on Monday evening. So we hope to be in Florida sometime Tuesday.

This give us the ability to get our beach on on Wednesday!!!!

Gift Idea #2

Dad tools around some on the computer. Not alot. Maybe he lacks patience. He uses email and plays solitare. He'd probably surf the internet more if it was swifter. Their computer is pretty obsolete. iMac circa 1999. It runs an old operating system that is no longer updated so it can't run great software.

I think mom would LOVE to have a quality printer to print photos of Maddie, etc. Printers are cheap but I don't think we can find one compatible with the iMac. Oh, this isn't mom's present. But Dad would love to have pics of Maddie too.

Perhaps we can find a good deal on a basic desktop model (Dell?) all internet ready and a nice printer.
